Start with the thing you need to store and the surface available. Freestanding storage avoids an adhesive bond; an over-door hanger depends on door clearance; an adhesive fixing depends on the exact surface and rated use. “No drill” describes the installation method, not a promise that every rented room is suitable.
Find a home for what you use
- Compare freestanding, over-door and adhesive options.
- Match the exact fixing to its surface and rated use.
- Leave doors, exits and removal tabs accessible.
Choose by the constraint
| Method | What it leaves alone | What still matters |
|---|---|---|
| Freestanding | An adhesive bond to the wall. | Stability, clear access and any required anchoring. |
| Over-door | Potentially the wall surface. | The exact instructions: some products still require screws. |
| Adhesive | Drilled holes. | Permitted surface, preparation, rated use and correct removal. |
Freestanding: when the wall is the uncertainty
A floor-standing basket or organiser can leave the wall alone, but it still needs a stable position and a clear route past it. Follow any anchoring instructions: if a unit requires fixing to the wall, calling it freestanding does not remove that requirement. Reject a solution that blocks an exit or makes the room harder to use.
Over-door: when the door can still work
Measure door thickness, the gap above it and the space behind it. Check that the door closes normally and that hooks cannot strike another surface. A manufacturer’s thickness dimension does not establish all of these clearances.
For a specific example, IKEA’s ENUDDEN hanger, 602.516.65 is listed for a 4cm-thick door and as 35cm wide by 13cm high. However, the product page says it is fixed with screws, and the assembly instructions (step 3, page 8) show screw fixings into the top of the door. We therefore exclude ENUDDEN as an unqualified no-drill option. Do not assume an over-door shape means a screw-free installation; check the whole instruction sequence. These dimensions do not establish clearance or a safe load.
Adhesive: when both surface and use match
Read the exact pack before purchase. Check whether the surface is permitted, how it should be prepared, how long to wait before loading and how removal works. Wallpaper, a weak finish or uncured paint can make an otherwise convenient idea unsuitable. Check your tenancy terms and obtain permission where required.

A picture rating is not a storage rating
3M’s Command Large Black Picture Hanging Strips 17206BLK-UKN specify four sets for one frame up to 7.2kg, with a maximum frame size of 60×90cm. The product page directs a seven-day wait after painting and an hour before loading. Check the pack, paint and surface requirements before applying it. That rating belongs to this picture-hanging product and configuration. It does not make a shelf, bag or shelf bracket safe at the same weight.
The Command UK FAQs also warn against combining hooks to invent a higher load limit. Match the exact product, surface and intended use; do not treat “removable” as a guarantee against paint damage.
The no-drill decision card
- Object: what will it hold, including its contents?
- Surface or door: what is it, what condition is it in, and what permission is needed?
- Exact product: is that object and configuration covered by the stated rating?
- Working space: can the door close and people move safely?
- Exit plan: can you follow the removal instructions later, with access to any release tabs?
Choose the method your room can support
Choose the option whose conditions you can actually meet. If the surface is uncertain, avoid treating adhesive as the default. If the door fit is uncertain, do not force it shut. Keeping an object elsewhere can be the better use of the room. For the same space-first approach to appliances, see the small-kitchen air-fryer checklist.
